2010 HAITI EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE
Within 48 hours of the 2010 earthquake, Solventas-supported medical teams were on the ground in Port-au-Prince—among the first to respond as hospitals were overwhelmed and resources were scarce. Working alongside local providers, a volunteer team quickly established a triage unit beside a hospital already pushed beyond capacity, treating a continuous flow of patients with severe, untreated injuries.
In those early moments, the urgency was constant. One young girl arrived alone, her face swollen and a deep head wound from falling debris. As supplies became available, the team treated and stitched her injury while offering comfort in the midst of chaos—an experience that reflected both the intensity of the crisis and the fragility of recovery, where infection and lack of follow-up care posed ongoing risks.
At Haitian Community Hospital, the team performed life-saving amputations and implemented a triage system to manage the volume of critical cases. As the situation evolved, care shifted from acute trauma to treating infections and complications—often requiring repeat interventions due to limited post-operative follow-up and persistent aftershocks that kept patients from returning.
Recognizing early coordination challenges among global relief efforts, the team introduced a structured, leadership-driven approach—establishing clear roles, daily alignment, and operational discipline to stabilize care delivery.
While many organizations responded in the immediate aftermath, Solventas’ commitment extended far beyond the moment—focused on sustained partnership, long-term support, and ensuring recovery efforts continued long after global attention faded.
