THE FOUNDATION OF EVERYTHING
The Pothawira medical campus began with a single, critical step: building access where none existed. In partnership with Dr. Anne Alaniz and local leadership, Solventas Foundation (then One5) helped design and construct the original outpatient clinic in Salima—transforming undeveloped land into a functioning healthcare system. Completed in 2010, the clinic was thoughtfully designed to meet immediate needs while allowing for long-term expansion. The facility included exam rooms, a laboratory, pharmacy, ultrasound capabilities, and core infrastructure—laying the groundwork for a scalable medical campus. What followed was immediate and overwhelming demand. Patients traveled—often on foot, from miles away—for the first reliable access to care. What began with just a few hundred patients quickly grew into a system now serving more than 35,000 patient visits annually, supported by 44 local staff members and rotating physician specialties. The lesson was clear: When access exists, communities respond. And that response became the catalyst for everything that followed.
