Financial Support + Expertise = Positive Patient & Economic Outcomes
Impact investing is a unique approach to address seemingly intractable problems and put limited resources toward long-term solutions. It causes an economic multiplier effect locally, nationally and internationally.
Solventas will loan or invest a portion of your financial support to or in developing world surgical practices, along with foundations, family offices and other accredited impact investors. These investments harness the power of enterprise and empower local surgeons – those with an understanding of the people and the marketplace – to equip, operate and market a surgical practice that is financially self-sufficient.
But after the investments, these surgeons are not on their own. Solventas supports the investment with expertise from volunteer surgeons and medical management professionals. This hybrid investment model – loans plus management and surgical expertise – is a powerful combination that helps local surgeons provide care to the truly indigent, manage their practice for long-term success, and even call upon their colleagues from afar to assist with difficult cases and procedures.
Each time Solventas exits an investment it will put the proceeds back into its mission in another surgically-underserved, developing world community with a local surgeon who has that community’s best interest at heart.
How it Works
Solventas investment funds will take the form of units or interests in limited liability companies (LLCs), low-income LLCs (L3Cs) or partnerships that will then make loans to or direct equity investments in developing world surgical practices along with the surgeons performing the services. This development method aligns the economic interests of the surgeons with that of Solventas and the practice sustainability Solventas expects. Solventas investments create an incentive for the surgeons to not only make their practice sustainable, but also to devote their full time and attention to its productivity.
As with a traditional small business loan, surgeons receiving financial support from Solventas and its investors will be expected to either repay their loan or provide a return on equity. It is both our hope and expectation that by the time a facility meets its financial obligation to Solventas, it will have achieved consistent patient flow and, in turn, the means for self-sustainability and the ability to obtain additional lines of credit or working capital from local sources.
Solventas fund terms are yet to be determined, but when available will be made available only to foundations, family offices and other “accredited investors,” as that term is defined in the Securities Act of 1933.
